Online Writing Resources

As I said in the first post about my new novel, I need to learn more about writing. So, I’m looking at online writing resources, and collecting them here. Hopefully some of you will comment here, or on one of the social media spots, with more of these. I’m concentrating mostly on learning about characters at this time, but these links are pretty random. Some of them….some of them I looked at long ago, and will go back to. Others are things I’ve meant to read or watch, and have not.

If any of you are also writing, I hope some of these are helpful! (edit: I’ll be adding to this post as I find resources I like, and when I add more than a few, I’ll send out a tweet or something) In addition to posting them, I’ll (maybe) write up detailed comments on what I like and discovered.

Links, links, and more links.

Vivien Reis has a series of videos on her process, and there are some really good pieces of advice here. The self-publishing information was especially interesting, back when I finished my first novel. But really, I should have concentrated on the other videos more! Not surprisingly, she also has a website with resources.

One of the owners of World Anvil talks about making your world more immersive in this video.

The first suggestion from y’all! He’s a creative type, and I haven’t watched any of this!

Links to websites

These are in random order (as were the previous, btw).

NaNoWriMo.…National novel writing month, the website and organization. You should maybe download the Resource Guide.

well storied is trying to sell you something, sure. I admire that! It also has some great free advice, which I also admire. An insane amount of free advice, really. Check it out.

Tor, the book company, has tips on writing. A lot are filled with publicity for one of their books, but I REALLY like this one (about making readers feel like they are there?) in particular. I also like this one about telling us things early (I think the Runelords books do this well too). Turns out the author of the Runelords books teaches and has advice on his site too!

I’ve only skimmed this one, but 55 ways to make a compelling character? And, it is part of a series? Yes!

Another I’ve only skimmed, and the site must have more, given its name…..but how to create a compelling character (another one!)

Lots of great stuff at universities. Not sure how I came upon this one from Purdue, but here it is. An outline on writing better stories (among other things). Nice.

Grammar and the right word are not always my strength. This site makes some of that easier.

Pretty sure this site wants me to pay to read more than an article or two a month…..but I like this one about, you guessed it, characters and archetypes.

This site is about movie scripts, sure. But, what’s a good script (hint: a good story). I really love the use of examples here.

One of my favorite authors, Steven Brust, but I’ve not read the blog at all yet. I assume there is stuff here to use…..
